Britain is poised to become a leader in wind energy by setting a new record for electricity generation produced by onshore and offshore turbines. The news represents a milestone in the advancement of renewable energy for energy security, as well as its affordability and benefits in the fight against the climate crisis .
According to the United Nations (UN), there Middle East Mobile Number List is a real opportunity that as renewable energy technology is promoted, countries will be able to diversify their economies and protect them from unpredictable fluctuations in fossil fuel prices, while driving inclusive economic growth, the creation of new jobs and poverty reduction.
The new leader in wind energy… Great Britain
Stormy weather conditions reportedly helped the European nation set another record for wind power generation over the New Year period, according to data from the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), which manages Britain's network.
On Friday 30 December, the UK wind turbine fleet recorded 20,918 GW of electricity in a half-hour period between 6:00 and 6:30 pm, surpassing the previous record of 20,896 GW set on 2 November. The spike represented the third time the generation record has been broken during 2022. In May, National Grid had to ask some turbines in the west of Scotland to be shut down as the grid could not store such a large amount of electricity. A record 19.9 GW of energy was then produced.
“One of the main benefits of wind energy is that it moves our turbines without us having to pay for or transport fuel.”
James Kelloway , ESO Energy Intelligence Manager.
National Grid also announced that a new record was set on the same day for the proportion of electricity on the grid coming from low-carbon, renewable and nuclear sources over a half-hour period, supplying 87.2% of energy demand. Overall, wind provided 61.4% of Britain's electricity on the last Friday of 2022.
Renewable energy drives sustainable future
According to the analysis carried out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), energy is at the heart of the climate challenge and is key to the solution. A large portion of the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) that cover the Earth and trap the sun's heat are generated through energy production, by burning fossil fuels to produce electricity and heat.
So it is essential to secure energy supplies and tackle rising gas energy prices, says Dan McGrail, chief executive of trade body RenewableUK, who also praised the new records as further evidence of the vital role of renewable energy.
“The fact that UK onshore and offshore wind farms continue to set new electricity generation records shows how important this technology has become in our modern energy system.”

Affordable and sustainable wind energy
The rise in wind generation represents a notable change in fortunes, as the cold snap that engulfed Britain and Europe sent demand for heating energy soaring, despite high bills.
However, milder weather in the UK and Europe in recent days has led to a reduction in consumer demand and a drop in wholesale gas prices. It also reduced the risk of power outages this winter , which National Grid had warned about.
